Divorce Post-Pandemic

COVID-19 has changed our way of life forever. Here in Pennsylvania, we have not seen such a breakdown in our legal system since the American Civil War. By now, we are coming to understand that the way we lived our lives before the pandemic will never return. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to fundamentally adjust our daily lives and adapt to a new and ever-changing way of life. What we once took for granted, such as a meal eaten in a local restaurant, attending a close friend’s wedding, or even simply shaking the hand of a new acquaintance, may not become part of our daily life for an indefinite amount of time. Marriages have also been affected; some for the worse. Not only is socializing restricted, but many parents are now expected to cope with homeschooling and working from home. What was once a normal family life has been turned upside down. This is all extremely stressful.

The unfortunate reality for many relationships is that social distancing has resulted in couple distancing. Whether you and your spouse were having marital issues prior to or are just discovering issues during the crisis, the reality is that the pandemic has already created a new life for everyone. Many are now realizing that divorce may be the best path forward for them.

This is why family law attorneys across the nation are expecting a spike in the number of new divorce and custody cases filed. Attorneys are preparing for a surge of new divorce and custody filings, in what will likely be a “race to the courthouse” to file first upon the court’s resumption of normal operations.

Worldwide, each country’s divorce rate has spiked once quarantine measures have been lifted, including states in the United States that are returning to their new normal. Although a surge in divorce filings here in Pennsylvania is not a given, we expect the situation to be similar. Statt Law is ready and prepared to help you navigate a post-COVID divorce.

Many unhappy couples who wish to divorce are simply waiting until the stay at home order, or what is referred to as “red status” in Pennsylvania, has been lifted. Parents do not want to create more family turmoil under the same roof with the looming concerns of Covid-19. One reason, we believe, that some of those facing marital problems are not currently seeking a divorce is that there is nowhere for one spouse to go. It is not an ideal time to find a new place or move out with so many social restrictions in place.

Once the lockdown is over, though the timing may be better, we understand that finances may still be a problem. It will take time for the economy to recover, including the job market and personal finances. Statt Law does not want finances to be the reason you do not move forward when you are ready. We have many options available, including payment plans. The details of your situation can be discussed during a complimentary consultation.
